Method
How this calculator works
The first number on an N-P-K label is the percentage of nitrogen by weight. This calculator uses that percentage to convert an already-established nitrogen amount into fertilizer product weight. Establish the appropriate rate from your soil test, product label, and applicable local guidance before using the result.
Nitrogen lb = lawn ft² ÷ 1,000 × specified nitrogen lb per 1,000 ft². Product lb = nitrogen lb ÷ (nitrogen percentage ÷ 100).
Worked example
A realistic starting point
For a 2,000 ft² area and an illustrative target of 0.5 lb nitrogen per 1,000 ft², the target is 1 lb nitrogen. A 20% nitrogen product supplies that in 5 lb of product. Buying one 20 lb bag leaves 15 lb unused; it does not justify applying the whole bag.

Factors worth checking
Nutrient versus product
A 20 lb bag marked 20% nitrogen contains 4 lb nitrogen. The remaining product weight is not additional nitrogen.
Use the correct recommendation
A seasonal total is different from an amount for one application. This tool does not choose the schedule or determine whether nitrogen is needed.
Purchase and application
Whole bags determine purchase cost. Actual application uses the product-weight result; keep leftovers separate from the amount to spread.

Does the calculator recommend a fertilizer rate?
No. It converts a rate you supply into product weight.
Can I enter a zero-nitrogen product?
Not for a nitrogen target. A product with no nitrogen cannot supply the specified nitrogen amount.
Should I spread the whole purchased bag?
Only if its weight matches the amount to apply. The calculator shows surplus explicitly.
