Start with the job
A new bed that needs physical fill is a different task from amending existing soil. Measure the remaining space accurately, and use testing or local guidance to establish the composition you need.

Calculate components separately
A 32 ft³ bed does not automatically need 32 ft³ of compost. If the selected blend calls for an illustrative 25% compost by volume, that component is 8 ft³ and the other components total 24 ft³. The percentage is an arithmetic example, not a recommended recipe.

Compare quotes on one basis
Bags, bulk volume, and scale weight are different sold units. Use actual bag volume and any supplier density conversion. Check delivery, screening or other product specifications, and whether spreading is included.

Why can equal volumes weigh differently?
Bulk density depends on composition, void space, and moisture. Equal cubic yards need not mean equal tons.
