How Many Bags of Mulch Are in a Cubic Yard?
One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. Divide 27 by the volume on a mulch bag to find the equivalent number of bags, then round up if you must buy complete bags.

A fractional bag is a volume equivalent, not a package you can purchase. The extra volume from rounding is different from a separate allowance for an uneven bed.

Compare delivered cost for the same quantity
For a two-yard requirement, 27 bags of 2 ft³ provide exactly 54 ft³. At an illustrative $3 per bag, material costs $81. Bulk mulch at an illustrative $30 per yard plus $50 delivery costs $110. These invented rates demonstrate the arithmetic; local quotes can reverse the result.
Measure the bed before choosing bags
First calculate the additional layer: area × depth in inches ÷ 12 gives cubic feet. Exclude permanent paths and other unfilled areas. Compare access as well as price: a bulk delivery may need a suitable unloading location, while bagged material can be carried to separate beds.
- Use bag volume, not weight.
- Compare the same mulch product and finished quantity.
- Apply a purchase allowance once, then round the chosen package.
