Method
How this calculator works
Asphalt material quantity depends on compacted volume and mix density, while installed price also depends on the base, grading, drainage, mobilization, equipment, and removal. A tonnage check is useful, but it should not be treated as a complete bid.
Compacted volume = length × width × compacted thickness. Tons = cubic feet × density ÷ 2,000. Installed range = area × (rate + removal) × regional factor + fixed extras.
Worked example
A realistic starting point
A 20 ft by 30 ft driveway at 3 in compacted thickness has 600 ft² and about 10.88 tons at 145 lb/ft³. With a 5% allowance, plan for about 11.42 tons. At $7–$13 per ft², the starting range is $4,200–$7,800.

Compacted lift thickness
Loose asphalt is thicker before rolling. Use the compacted design thickness for the quantity calculation.
Base condition
A sound, well-drained base is essential. Undercutting weak areas, adding aggregate, and correcting slope can dominate the project cost.
New, replacement, or overlay
An overlay may use less new material but only works when the existing pavement and drainage are suitable.
Mobilization
Small projects still need trucks, rollers, pavers, and crew travel. Minimum charges make small-area unit costs less predictable.

Why does asphalt density matter?
The same compacted volume can weigh differently with mix design and density. Supplier or project mix data should replace the default when available.
Can I use loose thickness?
No. Enter the expected compacted thickness. The paving crew accounts for compaction during placement.
Is an overlay always cheaper?
Not if the existing pavement has structural, drainage, or base failures. Those problems can reflect through a new overlay.
Are sealing and maintenance included?
No. The result is an installation planning estimate; future maintenance is a separate lifecycle cost.
