How this calculator works

Retaining walls hold soil and manage grade, so geometry is only part of the job. Drainage, foundation preparation, backfill, soil pressure, surcharge loads, geogrid, setbacks, and engineering can be more important than block count. The calculator is a material and budget planner, not a structural design tool.

Formula

Courses = (exposed height + buried depth) ÷ block height, rounded up. Blocks per course = wall length ÷ block length, rounded up. Total blocks and caps add the selected waste. Installed cost = visible face area × rate + extras.

Worked example

A realistic starting point

A 30 ft wall with 3 ft exposed and 6 in buried, using 16 in × 6 in blocks, needs 7 courses, about 178 blocks with 10% waste, and 25 caps. At $25–$60 per face ft², the range is $2,250–$5,400.

Drainage

Drain stone, pipe, outlets, filter fabric, and surface water control are essential parts of many retaining-wall systems.

Soil and surcharge

Slope above, vehicles, structures, weak soil, and water pressure change the forces on the wall and may require engineering.

Buried course and base

The first course is often partially buried on a compacted leveling base. Excavation and grade steps affect quantities.

Corners and curves

Corners, radii, steps, columns, and caps alter unit counts and cutting. Calculate stepped sections separately.

Why count a buried course?

Many segmental wall systems embed part of the first course for stability and finished grade. Follow the system design and manufacturer instructions.

When do I need an engineer?

Requirements vary, but walls around 4 ft or taller—and lower walls with slopes, loads, poor soil, or water—often need professional and permit review.

Is drainage included in the price?

The editable rate may or may not include it. Confirm every local quote’s excavation, stone, pipe, fabric, outlets, and backfill scope.

Can I calculate a stepped wall?

Yes, by dividing it into constant-height sections, calculating each section, and adding the material totals.
