Method

How this calculator works

A durable paver patio is a layered system, not only a count of surface units. Excavation, compacted base, bedding, edge restraint, drainage, cuts, pattern, and site access all affect cost. The calculator keeps paver waste and base allowance separate so each can be adjusted.

Formula

Pavers = patio area × (1 + paver waste) ÷ paver face area, rounded up. Base yd³ = patio area × base depth ÷ 27 × (1 + base allowance). Installed range = patio area × rate + fixed extras.

Worked example

A realistic starting point

A 16 ft by 12 ft patio is 192 ft². Using 4 in by 8 in pavers with 10% waste gives about 951 pavers. A 6 in base with 10% allowance requires about 4.00 yd³. At $16–$26 per ft², the planning range is $3,072–$4,992.

What changes the answer

Factors worth checking

01

Pattern and cuts

Diagonal, circular, bordered, and multi-size patterns increase cutting and may require a larger paver allowance.

02

Base depth

Soil, freeze-thaw exposure, drainage, and intended loads determine excavation and compacted aggregate depth.

03

Edges and drainage

Edge restraint, pitch, drains, steps, and transitions are critical details that may not scale directly with patio area.

04

Pallet quantities

Manufacturers sell by layer, band, pallet, or cube. Convert the final whole-unit estimate to the actual package quantity.

Common questions

Paver patio cost FAQ

How much paver waste should I add?

Simple straight layouts may need less; diagonal patterns, curves, borders, color blending, and replacement stock generally need more.

Is the base included in installed cost?

The default installed rate is a planning range. Check whether local bids include excavation, haul-off, aggregate base, bedding, edge restraint, and sealing.

Does joint width change paver count?

Yes. This MVP uses face dimensions and a waste allowance. Follow the manufacturer’s coverage or units-per-square-foot data when available.

Can I use this for a driveway?

The quantity math is useful, but vehicular pavement requires a suitable paver, base section, edge restraint, drainage, and design.
