Paver Base and Bedding Sand: Calculate Both Layers
A paver area can need a compacted aggregate base and a separate bedding layer. Combining both depths into one generic gravel order loses the distinction between materials and their purchase quantities.

For a 12 × 20 ft area, the footprint is 240 ft². A 4-inch base is 80 ft³ before a loose-volume allowance. A 1-inch bedding layer is 20 ft³. These example depths illustrate quantity arithmetic and are not an installation specification.

Use separate product densities and prices
Apply any specified base allowance before converting its loose volume to tons. Convert bedding using its own density and depth basis. Different products can require different supplier minimums, loads, and rates even when ordered together.
Keep other paver materials outside these layers
Jointing sand, pavers, edge restraints, and installation are separate quantities. Do not substitute bedding volume for jointing-sand consumption. For a full budget, use the paver patio cost tool and make sure its scope does not charge a layer twice.
- Confirm the specified base and bedding products.
- Record whether delivery is combined or separate.
- Check layer depths against the actual pavement specification.
