Straight-match or random-match estimate. Half-drop patterns and special panels need the manufacturer’s layout. Openings are not subtracted because full drops may still be needed. Enter physical roll dimensions, not a single/double-roll marketing label.

Only prices you entered are included. Zero-priced items, delivery, tax, tools, and labor are excluded unless entered separately.

Planning estimate, not a contractor quote. Review the assumptions and replace presets with local prices when available.

Method

How this calculator works

Wallpaper with a repeating pattern can require longer cuts than the wall height. Enter the usable roll dimensions, straight pattern repeat, and total trimming allowance. The estimator rounds each drop to a complete repeat, calculates full drops per roll, and then rounds the total roll purchase.

Formula

Base drop inches = wall height × 12 + total trim. Matched drop = base drop rounded up to a full repeat, or base drop for random match. Drops per roll = floor(roll length inches ÷ matched drop). Rolls = ceil((required drops + spares) ÷ drops per roll).

Worked example

A realistic starting point

A 40 ft wall perimeter and 20.5-inch roll width require 24 full-height drops. With one spare drop, the target is 25. At an 8 ft wall height, 4 inches total trim, no repeat, and a 33 ft roll, each roll yields 3 drops, so 9 rolls are needed.

What changes the answer

Factors worth checking

01

Physical roll dimensions

Single-roll and double-roll terminology is not a reliable physical unit. Enter the width and usable length of the package actually sold.

02

Pattern matching

The model supports random match and a straightforward repeat allowance. Half-drop, alternating panels, and A/B designs require the manufacturer’s arrangement.

03

Openings and spare drops

A door or window may still need a full drop cut around it. This estimate does not subtract openings automatically; adjust the takeoff with a layout if appropriate.

Common questions

Wallpaper FAQ

Why not divide wall area by roll area?

That can assume short leftovers are reusable as full-height drops. This calculator counts usable complete drops first.

Can it handle a half-drop pattern?

Not reliably. Use the manufacturer’s matching plan or product calculator for half-drop and special-panel designs.

What if a roll is shorter than one drop?

The calculator reports an error rather than returning an invalid roll count. Check wall height, roll length, trim, and pattern repeat.
