Method

How this calculator works

Use the room dimensions for a rectangular space and choose whether its ceiling is included. The tool provides an area-based sheet estimate; final sheet layout depends on framing, joints, required assemblies, and how boards can be carried into the room. Compare alternative sheet lengths before ordering.

Formula

Net surface = 2 × (length + width) × height − openings + optional ceiling area. Sheets = ceil(net surface × allowance factor ÷ (sheet width × sheet length)).

Worked example

A realistic starting point

For a 20 × 10 ft room, 8 ft walls, and 20 ft² of openings, the wall surface is 460 ft². With 10% allowance it becomes 506 ft². At 32 ft² per 4 × 8 ft sheet, buy 16 sheets before checking the actual layout.

Sheet dimensions

Enter the full physical panel size. A longer panel can reduce joints yet create handling or transport constraints.

Openings and reusable offcuts

Subtract openings only when that matches your takeoff approach. Small openings may not recover a reusable piece, so compare the estimate with a sheet layout.

Boards versus finishing

The output covers panels. Screws, tape, compound, beads, preparation, and labor remain separate budget items.

Does the estimate include ceilings?

Only when Include ceiling is selected. Separate ceilings using another board type into their own estimate.

Can I compare 4 × 8 and 4 × 12 sheets?

Yes. Change sheet length in the comparison scenario and compare counts, cost, and practical handling.

Does this specify a fire-rated wall?

No. Board quantity does not establish a compliant wall or ceiling assembly.
