Vinyl vs Laminate Flooring: Compare Boxes and Installed Cost

Last reviewed September 6, 2026

Quick verdict

Compare the exact products approved for the intended room, then calculate complete-box material cost and the same installation scope. A low box price is not meaningful without its coverage.

01

Read the actual product requirements

Material labels cover many product lines. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the room, substrate, moisture conditions, underlay, and installation method. Do not infer a universal waterproofing promise or an installation rule from the word vinyl or laminate alone.

02

Compare complete boxes

For a 275 ft² floor with 10% allowance, the target is 302.5 ft². A hypothetical product covering 20 ft² at $40 per box needs 16 boxes costing $640. Another covering 24 ft² at $45 needs 13 boxes costing $585. The cheaper box is not the cheaper material order.

03

Use the same finished scope

Include preparation, removal, transitions, trim, and delivery consistently. If one quote includes underlay and the other excludes it, reconcile that difference before judging the totals. The flooring calculator uses measured floor area for entered installation cost and rounded boxes for material cost.

Limits

What this comparison does not decide

  • Illustrative prices are not current market offers.
  • Suitability, moisture limits, and warranties belong to the exact product specification.
