Interiors calculator
Flooring Calculator
Estimate full flooring boxes, purchased coverage, surplus, and the installation costs you enter.
Planning estimate, not a contractor quote. Review the assumptions and replace presets with local prices when available.
Method
How this calculator works
Laminate, vinyl, and wood flooring are sold with product-specific box coverage. This calculator uses that figure directly, avoiding a separate page for every product label. Measure the surface that will actually be covered, then compare products by complete-box cost and installation scope.
Net floor = length × width − exclusions. Boxes = ceil(net floor × allowance factor ÷ box coverage). Total = boxes × box price + net floor × installation rate + fixed extras.
Worked example
A realistic starting point
A 200 ft² floor with 10% allowance needs 220 ft² of coverage. At 20 ft² per box, it needs 11 boxes and leaves 20 ft² above the measured area. At an illustrative $45 per box, material cost is $495 before installation and extras.
What changes the answer
Factors worth checking
Use box coverage
Copy the coverage from the specific package. Plank count and dimensions can be misleading when nominal width or packaging differs.
Measure installation separately
The installation subtotal uses net measured floor area, not the extra flooring bought for cuts. Use the contractor’s agreed billing basis.
Plan the complete scope
Underlay, moisture preparation, transitions, base trim, removal, and delivery may sit outside the quoted floor installation rate. Enter agreed extras once.
Common questions
Flooring FAQ
Can this calculate vinyl and laminate?
Yes. Both use the product’s box coverage. Choose the material through its specification, then enter its coverage and price.
Why not buy the exact measured area?
Cuts and full-box rounding can require more material. The calculator keeps measured, adjusted, and purchased areas separate.
Does the cheapest box mean the cheapest floor?
No. Compare total complete-box coverage and installed cost, because boxes can contain different areas.
