Flooring Boxes and Waste: Coverage, Surplus and Cost
Use the coverage printed on the exact flooring package. Box count varies between products, so comparing box prices without comparing coverage can reverse which option looks cheaper.
Reviewed September 6, 2026Calculate the full-box order
For a 275 ft² floor with 10% allowance, the target is 302.5 ft². A product covering 20 ft² per box needs 16 boxes, supplying 320 ft². The surplus above the measured floor is 45 ft², which includes both cutting allowance and package rounding.

These sample prices illustrate the method rather than describe current offers.
Same 302.5 ft² target
| Product | Coverage / box | Price / box | Boxes | Material total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 20 ft² | $40 | 16 | $640 |
| B | 24 ft² | $45 | 13 | $585 |
Keep installation on the agreed billing area
Many project estimates use the measured floor area for installation and the rounded purchase area for materials. Confirm the contractor’s billing basis. Underlay, preparation, moisture work, removal, trim, and delivery should appear explicitly rather than being guessed from the flooring box price.
