Compost Volume for Raised Beds and Soil Blends
Calculate the total space to fill, then multiply by the compost share in the blend you have selected. A bed-volume result does not mean the entire bed should be filled with pure compost.

A bed 4 × 8 ft filled 12 inches deep contains 32 ft³. If an independently chosen blend specifies a 25% compost share by volume, that component is 8 ft³, not 32 ft³.

Allow for material already in the bed
Measure the remaining fill depth or the actual volume being replaced. If amending existing soil, follow the specified amendment amount instead of treating the whole bed as empty. Keep different beds and soil conditions separate.
Choose the blend before using the calculator
Soil composition and nutrient needs depend on the planting and existing soil. Testing and local horticultural guidance can inform the choice. Once the blend is established, use the compost calculator for that component and the topsoil calculator for other volume-based components.
- Distinguish blend percentages by volume from percentages by weight.
- Use actual bag volumes.
- Do not increase an application solely to empty the last bag.
