Method
How this calculator works
Fence cost is usually planned by linear foot, but the material takeoff depends on panel spacing, posts, corners, gates, grade, and the exact system. This estimator uses one panel width and one gate size for a transparent starting point; complex layouts should be split into runs.
Panel length = total length − total gate width. Panels = panel length ÷ panel width, rounded up. Open-run posts = panels + gates + 1; closed-perimeter posts = panels + gates. Cost = length × (rate + removal) × regional factor + gate cost.
Worked example
A realistic starting point
For 150 linear feet with one 4 ft gate and 8 ft panels, the model gives 19 panels and about 21 posts for an open run. At $15–$45 per linear foot plus a $450 gate, the range is $2,700–$7,200.
What changes the answer
Factors worth checking
Material and height
Wood, vinyl, chain link, aluminum, steel, and composite systems have different post spacing, hardware, labor, and price.
Grade and corners
Stepping, racking, retaining conditions, many corners, and abrupt elevation changes increase layout and labor.
Gates
Gate width, weight, automation, hardware, bracing, and terminal posts can make a gate much more expensive than the same fence length.
Property and permit work
Surveying, setbacks, easements, utility marking, permits, and neighborhood restrictions should be resolved before construction.

How do I measure fence length?
Measure each run along the proposed fence line, exclude gate openings only when the calculator asks for them, and add the runs.
Why does an open run need one more post?
A straight series of spans has a post at both ends, so the number of posts is one greater than the number of spans.
Is old fence removal included?
Only when you enter a removal rate. Difficult footings, vegetation, access, and disposal can change that cost.
Does the estimate include a survey?
No. Property-line confirmation, permits, utility locating, and legal setbacks are separate responsibilities.
