Method
How this calculator works
Use separate product data for the load-bearing base and visible surface. This estimator applies each layer’s loose-volume allowance, rounds both weight orders, and adds the entered excavation, installation, and delivery costs. It does not select the driveway’s depth or drainage design.
Layer tons = area × depth inches ÷ 12 × allowance factor × loose density ÷ 2,000. Total = rounded base × base price + rounded surface × surface price + excavation yd³ × excavation rate + area × labor rate + delivery.
Worked example
A realistic starting point
A 20 × 10 ft driveway with a 6-inch base, 15% base allowance, and 105 lb/ft³ density requires 6.0375 exact base tons, rounded to 6.5 tons. A 2-inch surface with 10% allowance at 100 lb/ft³ gives 1.8333 tons, rounded to 2 tons.

Factors worth checking
Specify each layer
Use the actual grading and loose density from your quote. Different base and surface products need separate estimates and purchase increments.
Measure excavation independently
The excavation field represents material removed in place. It is not automatically the sum of new layers because existing levels and reusable base can change the excavation scope.
Avoid overlapping labor charges
The installation rate should exclude materials and excavation already entered elsewhere. Delivery is counted once; include all required loads in that field.

Does the excavation result equal truck volume?
Not necessarily. Excavated material can change volume when loosened. Ask the disposal contractor which volume basis their rate uses.
Can I use it for a driveway refresh?
Enter the planned quantities for the actual work. If no base layer is being purchased, use the single-material gravel or crushed-stone calculator for the surface-only job.
Are the default layer depths suitable for cars?
They are examples. Ground, drainage, vehicle loads, and local conditions determine the project specification.
