Topsoil Yards to Tons: Why Density Changes the Answer
A cubic yard measures volume and a ton measures weight. There is no fixed conversion for every topsoil product: enter a bulk density that matches the material and moisture condition in the quote.

US tons = cubic yards × 27 × density in lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000. These sample densities show sensitivity; they are not certified weights or recommended values for your supplier.

Use a consistent volume basis
A loose delivery volume and a compacted or settled volume describe different states. If your measured depth is a finished depth, first establish the loose volume to source. Then convert that volume using loose density. Applying a compaction factor after using an already-adjusted supplier yield can count the allowance twice.
Compare the quote with the order
Ask the supplier which ton is used, whether weight includes moisture, and whether a scale ticket is available. US short tons and metric tonnes differ. For transport planning, verify actual weight with the supplier and vehicle limits rather than treating this estimate as a load certification.
