Roof Pitch Multiplier Table for Area Estimates
For a roof plane with one pitch, multiply its horizontal projected area by the square root of one plus the squared rise-to-run ratio. The result is its sloped area before material allowance.

The formula is √(1 + (pitch rise ÷ 12)²). These values are geometric conversions, not roofing-system installation limits.
Rise per 12 horizontal units
| Pitch | Area multiplier |
|---|---|
| 0:12 | 1.0000 |
| 3:12 | 1.0308 |
| 4:12 | 1.0541 |
| 6:12 | 1.1180 |
| 8:12 | 1.2019 |
| 12:12 | 1.4142 |
Example: a complete gable footprint
A complete 30 × 40 ft horizontal footprint contains 1,200 ft². At uniform 6:12 pitch, its sloped area is about 1,341.64 ft² before overhangs and allowance. Do not multiply this answer by two merely because the roof has two sides: the whole footprint already includes both projected halves.
Handle overhangs and mixed pitches explicitly
If the footprint excludes overhangs, add their horizontal projection before applying the factor. Roof additions, dormers, and areas at another pitch need separate geometry. The roofing calculator covers one simple uniform-pitch rectangular footprint, and its exclusions should remain visible in the takeoff.
